Household Words, No. 5 by Charles Dickens

This wide-ranging passage moves from prison reform to religious history, united by a probing interest in how institutions shape human character. It attacks the separate system of solitary confinement as cruel, costly, and psychologically dangerous, arguing that it breeds secrecy, self-absorption, and "pattern penitence" rather than true repentance, while also rewarding criminals with comforts denied to laborers and the poor. The critique deepens through comparisons of prison food, housing, and expense with the lives of workhouse inmates, boarding-house tenants, and struggling families outside the walls. Against this inverted justice, the writer favors Captain Maconochie's mark system and insists that public money would be better spent educating children and improving the poor before they fall into crime. A skeptical letter from a young prisoner, a dispute with prison advocates, and a spirited defense of Dickens's honesty sharpen the argument, before a comic encounter with Mr. Blenkinsop and a Statue turns reform into a vision of the future. The final movement shifts to the early Church, tracing baptism from adult conversion and long instruction to infant baptism, with its rituals of immersion, confirmation, milk and honey, and changing regulations across centuries.
