Household Words, No. 6 by Charles Dickens

A proud grazier sends his prize bullocks and sheep to Smithfield Market, expecting admiration, only to discover a world of overcrowding, cruelty, and commercial indifference. As Mr. Thomas Bovington waits through the Sabbath night, he sees his stock driven, prodded, and packed into brutal pens where animals are denied space, food, and water, and where the market's chaos spills into the streets of London. Conversations with a former salesman reveal that the suffering is not accidental but built into a system that rewards sales while protecting no one's profits. When Bovington's own bull breaks loose in a mad rampage, the disaster ends in slaughter and leaves him disgusted, poorer, and newly aware of the cost of urban greed. The collection then turns to the stark beauty of Derbyshire, where miner David Dunster and his tireless wife, Betty, struggle through poverty, drink, temper, and domestic labor. Their fragile family life is shattered when their son is lost over a precipice in a storm, exposing the grief and guilt that haunt working-class homes. Finally, the volume shifts to a polemical essay attacking Oxford's reverence for antiquity, its outdated curriculum, and its resistance to modern science, history, and languages, while arguing that education must serve the living present rather than the dead weight of tradition.
