Saint Mungo's City by Sarah Tytler

In Saint Mungo's City, a family inheritance ignites a chain of scandal, suspense, and darkly comic defiance. When Bethia unexpectedly comes into money, the Miss Mackinnons are split by guilt, suspicion, and wounded pride; Janet, convinced that the will has done injustice, pushes them toward a reckless but strangely united solution: destroy it. The burning of the will becomes a ritual of outrage and liberation, but the act soon draws the law to their door, and the sisters are arrested on a warrant accusing them of malicious destruction. Back in Glasgow, their dingy household is transformed by the arrival of Claribel Drysdale, whose elegance and composure briefly lift the mood and stir romantic hopes in Eneas Mackinnon. Yet the visit is interrupted by the crisis from Strathdivie, and Claribel proves herself the calm center of the storm, escorting the frightened women to face the magistrate and preserving their dignity under humiliation. Around them, Tam Drysdale wrestles with inheritance, family loyalty, and the danger of buried truths, while seeking security through marriage plans and throwing himself into a whirl of hospitality, ship launches, picture sales, and flower shows. Sarah Tytler blends domestic comedy, social tension, and moral unease into a vivid portrait of pride, duty, and family feeling under pressure.
