Household Words, No. 23 by Charles Dickens

This sweeping work moves from the mills and markets of England to the storms, quarantine stations, and river passages of a Canadian emigrant voyage, always balancing hard facts with vivid feeling. In Dartford, the narrator traces the town's history of rebellion, industry, and paper-making, then enters the mill in a burst of wonder, imagining himself transformed from rag to finished sheet by machinery that seems almost alive. Elsewhere, sharp satire dismantles national gloom, arguing from tax returns, savings records, dividends, and poor-rate figures that England is growing richer, steadier, and less divided than its habitual complaints admit. That confidence in commerce and manufacture frames the emigrant's journey westward, where romantic hopes of sea travel are crushed by steerage misery, storms, seasickness, and constant danger. The passage to Canada becomes a candid record of hardship and endurance, from Rothesay Bay to the perilous St. Lawrence, the loss of another ship, Gros Isle quarantine, and the first majestic sight of Quebec. The closing lyric, "The Sister's Farewell," turns inward, offering a tender meditation on death, memory, and home. This edition has been fully restored with modern typesetting, custom cover design.
