The Romance of Mathematics (Restored Classics to Go Edition) by P. H. Ditchfield

A recovered cache of lectures, essays, notes, and verses from the brilliant Lady Professor of Girtham College turns mathematics into a weapon of satire. Framed by mock scholarship and a teasing introduction, the book ranges from female education and exam-room cruelty to brain waves, social forces, political motion, and the laws of government, exposing the pretensions of Victorian science with wit and bite. Its opening essay gives voice to a "Girtham Girl" who mocks the absurdity of her own label while defending women's intellectual stamina against smug male authorities and condescending arguments about female fragility. She skewers examiners, academic traditions, and the gender politics hidden beneath supposedly neutral mathematics, then shifts from righteous fury to self-reproach as her restless imagination interrupts disciplined thought. Other sections build elaborate comic systems in which circles, tangents, ellipses, and hyperbolas explain monarchy, revolution, constitutional balance, and social order, even using Russia as a warning against centralized power. The professor's "brain wave" theories extend the joke into mesmerism and mind-reading, suggesting thoughts, emotions, jealousy, and discoveries may pass from mind to mind. A playful love poem from a failed mathematician adds romantic counterpoint, making this a sharp, inventive blend of academic parody, social criticism, and light romance.
