Household Words, No. 20 by Charles Dickens

A detective in comic self-display recounts how he slipped into a thieves' network by posing as a naive country butcher, winning the confidence of receivers, butchers, and criminals near Smithfield while quietly tracking stolen lawns, silks, and other goods. His performance leads to a raid, then to a courtroom revelation that shocks the very men who trusted him. The narrative shifts to Serjeant Dornton, whose case begins with a suspicious carpet bag marked by a green parrot and becomes an international pursuit of the bill-stealing swindler Aaron Mesheck, traced from England to America and finally captured. From there, the book widens into satire, science, and reform. It reflects on detective work as a kind of living chess, then turns to a cynical oriental tale that exposes how servants consume a prince's medicine before he can use it. That story becomes an attack on London's public health failures: filth, overcrowding, bad drainage, and the Window Tax are shown to kill far more people than cholera, while local resistance and parliamentary inertia delay reform. The text demands practical action on sanitation, housing, refuse removal, and clean water. Elsewhere, it enters the anatomical rooms of a medical college and the patient work of Mr. Quekett, celebrates specimen-cataloguing and the science of pearls, and ends with a sharp moral warning about the cruelty hidden in white veal.
