Aino Folk-Tales by Basil Hall Chamberlain

Long preserved through oral tradition, these folk tales offer a rare glimpse into the mythology, beliefs, and storytelling heritage of the Ainu, the Indigenous people of northern Japan. Collected and translated by Basil Hall Chamberlain, the volume places Ainu traditions within the broader cultural landscape of Hokkaido and neighbouring regions, illuminating a society shaped by hunting, nature, and ancestral customs.

Alongside the narratives, the collection reflects the historical relationship between the Ainu and the expanding Japanese state, providing valuable cultural context for understanding their distinctive identity.

Rich in legendary figures, moral themes, and expressions of the natural world, these stories reveal the values and imagination of a people whose traditions were preserved through generations of oral transmission. An enduring introduction to Ainu folklore, this collection remains an important record of one of East Asia's most distinctive storytelling traditions.
