The Locket in the Marble Corridor by Sandor Berta
Fleetwood Manor’s centenary celebration is meant to be a dignified tribute to family pride and aristocratic tradition. Lady Eleanor Fleetwood, the mistress of the house, prepares to receive the guests with calm composure, while the old estate surrounds them with reminders of the past: portraits, marble nameplates, silver heirlooms, a chapel garden, and carefully labelled historical plant beds.
The central event of the celebration is the opening of a time capsule buried a hundred years earlier. But anticipation turns to shock when an old silver locket and an unsigned note are discovered inside. The note claims that a murder once took place at Fleetwood Manor, and that the key to the truth lies not in blood, but in a hidden name.
Eleanor’s attention soon turns to Clara Vale, a young companion who served at the manor in the 1920s and then vanished without a trace. According to the official family story, Clara stole from the household and fled. Local memory tells a different tale: that Clara saw too much, and that she may have been secretly connected to Julian Arthur Fleetwood, a man whose place in the family history has been deliberately obscured.
The clues slowly converge. A portrait in the marble corridor bears the wrong name. Inside the locket is Clara’s portrait, while Julian’s has been torn away. In the chapel garden, a neglected grave may conceal a life buried under a false name.
The old mystery becomes a present-day murder when Sebastian Marlowe, a family history adviser and morally dubious blackmailer, is found dead near the conservatory. At first, his death appears to be a natural collapse, but Dr. Lydia Ashcombe notices symptoms suggesting digitalis poisoning. Inspector Harland closes the estate, the guests are forbidden to leave, and Eleanor is drawn deeper into the shadowed history of her own house.
Suspicion falls in several directions. Lord Crispin Fleetwood is vulnerable to blackmail over debts and stolen silver. Dr. Lydia Ashcombe has an old professional grievance against Sebastian. Miles Vane, a young journalist, has been secretly taking photographs. Beatrice Vale, Clara’s descendant, is determined to recover the truth long denied to her family. Yet the evidence gradually gathers around Lady Honoria Fleetwood, a woman who values order, family dignity, and the preservation of the Fleetwood name above almost everything else.
By the end, Eleanor must face a painful truth: Fleetwood Manor is not threatened by scandal, but by the long silence that allowed names, lives, and truths to disappear beneath its marble.
The conclusion is not a triumphant unmasking, but a moral restoration. Sebastian’s killer is named, Clara Vale’s identity is returned to the light, Julian Arthur Fleetwood’s place is restored, and Fleetwood Manor can no longer remain the same house it was on the morning of the celebration.
