The Laast Aria at Glastonwyck by Sandor Berta

The Laast Aria at Glastonwyck
The story takes place at Glastonwyck Estate, a neo-Gothic English manor where the Dowager Countess hosts her traditional garden party for the local and metropolitan elite. The late-summer heat, the heavy scent of jasmine and lavender, the carefully tended rose garden, and the freely roaming peacocks create a lush, oppressive atmosphere. On the surface, the estate suggests perfect order, but from the very beginning, tension is visible among the family and guests. Petunia Featherstone, a sharp-eyed country gentlewoman with deep botanical knowledge, reads the smallest flaws in both gardens and people. She notices Lord Arthur Penhaligon’s nervousness, the Countess’s cruelty, Lady Gwendolyn’s fragility, and the sense that every polite exchange conceals something unsaid. Into this gathering arrives Alessandro Vivaldi, the famous opera tenor, whose presence immediately unsettles the company. Arrogant, theatrical, and cruel, he reopens old wounds with a few cutting remarks. Beatrice Montgomery, the injured soprano, openly despises him. Lady Gwendolyn carries the pain of a humiliated, hopeless attachment. Barnaby Higgins, the head gardener, has personal reason to hate Vivaldi because of an old grievance. Meanwhile, tensions between Lord Arthur and the Countess reveal financial and family troubles beneath the estate’s polished exterior. During the ceremonial toast, Vivaldi brazenly takes the Dowager Countess’s own crystal glass and drinks from it. Moments later, he collapses and dies before the entire party. The police are initially inclined to dismiss the death as an asthma attack, but Petunia’s observations point to poisoning. The liqueur in the glass, the almond-like scent, the tenor’s symptoms, and the objects found nearby all suggest premeditated murder. The situation becomes even more complicated when it becomes clear that the poisoned glass originally belonged not to Vivaldi, but to the Countess. The investigation therefore moves in two possible directions: was the tenor truly the intended victim, or did a twist of fate save the Dowager Countess from becoming the victim herself? Against the superficial assumptions of the official investigation, Petunia follows her own methods. She examines the garden, the palm house, the flower beds, the tools, and the behaviour of the guests. The suspects emerge one by one, yet some of the clues appear too obvious. The pruning shears, the poisonous plants, the open reticule, the resentful glances, and the buried grievances slowly lead Petunia toward a more complex truth. This is a classic cozy mystery set in an English manor garden, where the investigation unfolds through delicate observations, social tensions, and botanical details. At its heart lies the recognition that human passions grow much like wild shoots: if forced down for too long, they eventually break through with poisonous strength.
