Marble and the Past by Sandor Berta
The story is set at Fleetwood Manor, a neo-Gothic English estate where the family and invited guests have gathered to celebrate the house’s centenary. Dense fog and an approaching storm isolate the manor from the outside world, while the centrepiece of the evening is the opening of a time capsule buried in 1926.
The bronze box, however, does not contain the expected family relics. Inside are a silver pendant and a short, ominous note suggesting that an old crime lies hidden in the Fleetwood family’s past. The discovery immediately unsettles the guests, especially Lord Julian Sterling, the family solicitor, who appears to recognize both the pendant and the handwriting. Shortly afterward, he withdraws to the library, where Lady Victoria Fleetwood later finds him dead.
At first, his death might be mistaken for a heart attack, but Victoria’s sharp eye quickly detects something wrong. The teacup, the medicine bottle, the scent in the room, the tiny cotton thread left on the porcelain, traces of plant matter on the carpet, and Dr. Vance’s prescription book all suggest that Lord Julian has been poisoned. With the storm cutting off the estate, one fact becomes unavoidable: the murderer is among those inside the house.
Victoria takes the investigation into her own hands. She must discover why the contents of the time capsule terrified Julian, how the century-old pendant is connected to the present, and who had reason to silence the family solicitor. Suspicion falls in turn on Charles Fleetwood, Fiona Sterling, Dr. Vance, Eleanor Vance, and Arthur Pendelton, the butler who has served the house for decades and may know more about the Fleetwood past than anyone else.
As the investigation deepens, the centenary celebration becomes a reckoning. Behind the polished manners and social smiles emerge jealousy, guilt, old love, family shame, and the desire for revenge. The question is no longer only who killed Lord Julian Sterling, but what crime has waited a hundred years for the truth to be spoken aloud.
The book is an elegant, atmospheric, classic mystery in which the locked manor, the stormy night, aristocratic family secrets, and precisely placed clues create a quiet but steadily tightening suspense. Lady Victoria Fleetwood’s investigation becomes a search for truth behind order, reputation, and appearance.
