THE CARE AND FEEDING OF AN APEX PREDATOR by Janson Davies

Jeremy Winkle expected paperwork, maybe a modest inheritance, and one more ordinary Tuesday. Instead, his late uncle left him a sealed crate containing Ripley: a vast, color-shifting, emotionally perceptive creature of unknown species, unclear origin, and absolutely no interest in being treated like a pet.

What begins as a practical attempt to contain, feed, train, and insure an impossible animal becomes something far stranger and more intimate. Baby gates fail. Pet stores revolt. Veterinarians hedge. Neighbors complain. And Jeremy, dutiful to a fault, slowly discovers that Ripley does not need an owner so much as a companion willing to listen, adapt, and be changed.

Funny, humane, and quietly philosophical, The Care and Feeding of an Apex Predator is a story about grief, consent, chosen family, and the humbling work of loving what cannot be fully understood.
