The Odyssey by Homer - Two Translations - In Verse and In Prose - Unabridged by Homer, Samuel Butler, Alexander Pope

Homer's "The Odyssey" is the classic Greek poem that recounts the adventurer Odysseus's arduous journey home after the Trojan War and the trials that delay his return to Ithaca.

Along the way, he encounters storms, monsters, enchantresses, hostile gods, and the seductive forgetfulness of distant lands. Meanwhile, his wife, Penelope, resists persistent suitors, while his son, Telemachus, matures into courage and leadership.

This edition presents two influential English translations: Alexander Pope's celebrated verse rendering, known for its heroic couplets, polished diction, and neoclassical elegance, alongside Samuel Butler's straightforward prose translation, valued for its readability and conversational clarity.

Read together, they reveal how rhythm, style, and translation choices shape the poem's narrative energy, humor, heroism, and enduring exploration of loyalty, identity, homecoming, and perseverance across changing English literary traditions.

Alexander Pope's verse translation was published in the 1720s and is written primarily in heroic couplets. Samuel Butler's prose translation was first published in 1900 and emphasizes direct, accessible English. Butler's translation is annotated as well, providing important context throughout the manuscript.

Both translations are presented here in their original and unabridged formats.
