The Door They Never Opened by Celia Vellgrave

Behind one sealed door lies the secret that began everything.

For years, Marian Quenell and Elspeth Cattermole have lived within the strange divisions of Number Seventeen—a London townhouse inherited from a man neither woman truly understood. They have uncovered hidden passages, concealed letters, rewritten histories and the private lives of women whom respectable society preferred to forget.

Through every discovery, the house has changed them.

So has loving each other.

Now only one mystery remains.

Beneath the rear staircase stands a narrow door that Peregrine Dallow never intended them to open too soon. When evidence finally reveals how it can be reached, Marian and Elspeth discover an archive older and far more dangerous than anything concealed elsewhere in the house. Inside are decades of private testimony, legal papers and carefully preserved secrets belonging to women who once came to Number Seventeen because nowhere else in London was safe.

Among those records are two names Marian and Elspeth never expected to find.

Their mothers.

Long before either daughter was born, the two women crossed paths inside Number Seventeen during a desperate attempt to protect another woman's freedom, property and reputation. What happened there eventually shaped Peregrine Dallow's extraordinary will—and explains why Marian and Elspeth, of all people, were made unwilling partners in his house.

But discovering the truth creates a new danger. Old claims to the archive emerge, and the peculiar division of Number Seventeen that once seemed like Dallow's final joke may be the only thing preventing its history from being taken from them.

Yet the most difficult question is no longer hidden behind a wall.

Marian and Elspeth know they love one another. What they do not possess is a law willing to recognize what that love makes them.

Who owns their home if one of them dies? Who may stand beside a sickbed? Who inherits the possessions accumulated across a shared life? And how can two women protect a future together when respectable Victorian society refuses even to give that future a proper name?

Marian's answer is contracts, wills and carefully constructed protections.

Elspeth's answer is that love cannot simply be reduced to documents.

To keep the home they have fought for, they must finally discover that both answers can be true.

The Door They Never Opened is the fifth and concluding novel in The Women of Number Seventeen, a Victorian gothic sapphic romance series about hidden histories, complicated women, dangerous secrets and two lovers learning that permanence is not something society grants them—it is something they must build for themselves.
