The Woman Who Never Existed: An Impossible Crime Thriller by Carter Bryson

The woman they buried under Anna Bell's name was never born.

Adrian Cole spent twelve years at Justice deciding whether documents were telling the truth. Now he works out of a room above a print shop in Philadelphia, and the case a retired federal prosecutor drops on his desk is eleven years cold.

Curtis Reed is serving life for beating a woman to death in a kitchen on Cambria Street. His prints are on the door frame. His phone puts him on the block. He's never once said the victim's name.

Adrian pulls the file the way he pulls every file, one page at a time. Anna Bell has a license, a lease, a bank account, a work history. She also has nothing at all before the spring of 2002, and every document she owns traces back to a single sheet of paper that shouldn't exist.

Then the dental records that identified her body turn out to have been requested two days before anybody knew she was dead.

Somebody built this woman. Somebody closed her. And the name on her headstone belongs to a woman who's still alive, working nights in Kensington, keeping seven identification cards in a cigar box on a windowsill because she's learned that a person is only as real as the paper behind her.

The people who do this work don't carry guns. They carry forms. They don't threaten, they don't raise their voices, and they never take a document out of your hand. They wait for you to set it down.

By the time Adrian understands what's been happening to his own records, he's eleven weeks into a case where the man across the table can explain, politely, in the language of retention schedules, exactly how a living person stops having been born.

Reed knows something he's kept for eleven years. He's running out of time to say it.

THE WOMAN WHO NEVER EXISTED is the first book in The Identity Files, a trilogy about the machinery that decides who gets to be a person. For readers who like their thrillers procedural, their evidence real, and their villains too quiet to shout.
