The Winter Room by Celia Vellgrave

Winter has closed around Number Seventeen—and somewhere inside its walls, a room exists that should not be there.

After everything Marian Quenell and Elspeth Cattermole have survived together, the London townhouse they inherited has finally begun to feel less like an elaborate trap and more like a home. Their love is no longer something either woman can plausibly dismiss as temporary. Yet neither has forgotten how easily a private life can become dangerous when the wrong person decides to name it aloud.

Then Elspeth discovers that the measurements of Number Seventeen do not agree with those of the adjoining house.

Hidden between them is a narrow chamber absent from every official plan.

Inside lie possessions belonging to women from several different decades: gloves, keys, medicine bottles, clothing, burnt letters, traveling cases, and traces of lives temporarily erased from respectable London. But one discovery changes everything.

The room was used only three years ago.

Someone has been entering the secret passages of Celandine Square long after Peregrine Dallow supposedly sealed them, and someone now wants what the hidden chamber contains.

As Marian and Elspeth trace the belongings back to women who may still be alive, they uncover an uncomfortable truth about Number Seventeen. The house was not merely a refuge. Dallow kept records. Names. Connections. Enough information to protect women whose families wished to erase them—and enough to destroy them if those records reached different hands.

Soon the threat is no longer historical.

Someone knows what Marian and Elspeth are to one another.

Someone has watched their house closely enough to turn private affection into evidence.

And silence comes with a price.

Once Marian would have done almost anything to prevent scandal. Now she refuses to let fear dictate whom she may love or where she may live.

Elspeth, unexpectedly, is the one who wants caution.

For the first time in her life she possesses everything she once claimed not to need: steady work, a home, people who depend upon her, and a woman she cannot imagine losing.

Freedom was easier when there was little anyone could take from her.

Now there is everything.

As an unseen enemy closes in and the architecture of Celandine Square reveals another layer of its secrets, Marian and Elspeth must decide not simply how much truth they can afford to expose—but how much of their own life they are willing to risk protecting.

A Victorian Gothic sapphic romance of hidden rooms, dangerous records, blackmail, scandal, and two women discovering that choosing a life together may require more courage than falling in love ever did.
