You picked up this book because you love a child whose nervous system is doing far more work than most, and you are exhausted from the meltdowns that land in your living room at the worst hours of the day. You have heard that your child is difficult, or that you need better discipline, or that the behavior is something to be fixed, and you have quietly suspected that the room itself is part of the problem. Or maybe you have been handed a diagnosis and no instruction manual, and you are trying to build a life around a child whose world feels too loud, too bright, and too overwhelming, while everyone else seems to have opinions about what you are doing wrong. Whatever brought you here, you share the conviction that this book was written to honor: your child is not broken, and you are not failing, and the home is the one environment you fully control, which means it is the one place where the change can actually begin.
This book is not a medical manual, and it is not a replacement for your occupational therapist, and it is not a list of expensive products to buy. It is not a discipline system, and it is not a decorating guide, and it is not a promise that a well-designed home will erase every meltdown, because it will not. What you actually need is a system, and the pages that follow are that system: 45 practical, sensory-smart rules that treat the house itself as the intervention, so that the room does the calming work that no amount of sticker charts ever will.
Inside, you'll discover:
• The eight senses, and how to map your child's unique sensory profile
• The sensory budget, and why meltdowns happen long before they appear
• How to tame light, sound, touch, smell, and movement, one variable at a time
• Room-by-room fixes for the bedroom, bathroom, kitchen, and living spaces
• How to build the calm-down corner, the visual schedule, and the predictable day
• How to survive the meltdown itself, and turn every one into data that makes the next day easier
• The storage, routine, and transition systems that hold the whole home together
The meltdown is not a verdict on your parenting, and it is not a verdict on your child, and it is an accounting problem that you are allowed to fix. You cannot increase the budget very much, but you can cut the taxes, and cutting the taxes is what these 45 rules are for. This book will teach you to walk through your home and see exactly what each room is doing to your child's nervous system, and to fix the loudest problem in that room in an afternoon. You are not failing, and you are the only one who knows what your child needs, and this book gives you the tools and the permission to build a home where the meltdowns are fewer, the recovery is faster, and the family can finally breathe.
