FLAT

You are not sad. You are not in crisis. You just do not feel much of anything anymore.

There is a third state nobody warns you about, not depression, not anxiety, just a low gray hum where feeling used to be. You get up. You go to work. You say the right things at dinner. And underneath it all, the good news lands a half-second late and the food tastes like the idea of food. You have been watching your own life through a pane of glass, and you cannot remember when the glass went up.

FLAT is about that quiet, common, nearly invisible problem, the one psychologists have started calling languishing and the rest of us just call going numb. It is not a book about depression, though it shares a fence with it. It is for the person who functions perfectly and feels almost nothing, and has begun to wonder whether this gray middle is simply what adult life becomes.

Over fifteen chapters and fifteen practical exercises, Robert Smith maps how a nervous system turns its own volume down to survive chronic stress and overstimulation, and, more to the point, how it gets turned back up. The work starts absurdly small, in the body before the mind, in sensation before emotion, one cold glass of water at a time.

Inside:

- How to tell emotional numbness apart from depression, anxiety, and burnout, and when to see a professional - The dimmer switch that dials down joy and pain together, and why you cannot numb selectively - How to re-sensitize through the body, interoception, somatic re-entry, and small daily voltage - How to reclaim pleasure after anhedonia, and put down the scroll, the overwork, and the other anesthetics - How to build a life of friction, awe, contact, and meaning that keeps the dial up, and the short road back when the gray returns

Direct, literary, and unsentimental, grounded in the work of van der Kolk, Levine, Porges, Lembke, Keyes, and Frankl, with no easy affirmations and no false promises. If you have said "I'm fine" when you meant "I cannot feel anything anymore," this is the book that finally names it, and shows you the way back to a felt life.
