STAYED by Daryl Lopes

Daniel Mercer perfected a quiet kind of leaving — the kind that never moves. For years he shared a life with his son while staying just out of reach: always tired, always halfway elsewhere, disappearing in plain sight. He told himself it was work. He told himself it was exhaustion. He told himself tomorrow.

Now his son Eli is grown, the apartment is empty, and Daniel has started seeing things. A small boy at the end of the hallway. Still. Patient. Waiting with the terrible patience of someone who has waited before.

When Eli calls — unexpected, careful — the distance Daniel spent a lifetime maintaining begins to collapse. And with it, every story he told himself about why staying away was ever the same as staying.

Quiet, devastating, and achingly true, STAYED is a novel about the years we lose when we mistake survival for presence — and whether love, stubborn and wordless, can find its way back through the silence we leave behind.

A haunting upmarket debut, perfect for book clubs and for anyone who ever learned too late that presence matters more than perfection.
