Pine Script for Traders by Dev Rasmussen

Tens of thousands of public scripts, and most people never get past pasting in code they can't read.

TradingView gives you something genuinely uncommon: a real programming language, a backtesting engine, and server-side alerts — in a browser tab, free at the entry tier. That's why serious traders stay on the platform.

The trouble is that the community library is full of scripts that are subtly broken, deliberately obscured, or repainting in ways that make historical performance look far better than live performance. When you trade a script you can't read, you've outsourced a decision about your money to an anonymous stranger's code.

Pine Script for Traders gets you out of that situation. By the end you'll read any public script and tell whether it does what it claims, modify it to fit your trading, and write your own.

Inside you'll learn:

The execution model — "the script runs once per bar." Understand this and most confusion dissolves
Pine v5 syntax from zero: variables, series, inputs, conditionals, functions
Building indicators, oscillators, and visual overlays — plots, shapes, fills, labels, tables
Alerts that fire server-side with dynamic messages, and how to stop them repainting
Multi-timeframe analysis and the look-ahead trap — the single most common flaw in published scripts
Strategies and backtesting: orders, ATR stops, trailing exits, risk-based position sizing
How backtests lie — an entire chapter on overfitting, look-ahead bias, and ignored costs
How to read other people's scripts critically, with a red-flag checklist
A 20-snippet cookbook of reusable pieces

Plus a v5 quick reference, a common-errors table, and a backtest sanity checklist.

Educational content only. Not financial advice. This book explicitly argues that beautiful backtests are usually beautiful because of bias, overfitting, or unrealistic fills — and that learning to recognize this matters more than any strategy.

Honest scope: Pine Script is excellent at indicators, alerts, and backtesting. It is NOT a market scanner. Better you know that on page one than in chapter twelve.
