This book's crops split into three families. The brassicas — Broccoli/Cauliflower, Cabbage, Brussels Sprouts, Turnip/Rutabaga/Kohlrabi, Arugula/Mustard Greens, Bok Choy, and Collard Greens — share a genuine vulnerability to bolting in heat (except collards, the one heat-tolerant exception) and a recurring disease to watch for, clubroot. Quick reference: kale, along with other easier brassicas, is covered in Book 2 rather than here — those stayed at the beginner tier on difficulty, while this book collects the brassicas that ask more of you. The roots — Parsnip and Celeriac — round out the book with two genuinely patient, long-season crops from the carrot family. One more brassica, canola, closes out the book on its own — grown for its oil-rich seed rather than a head, root, or leaf, different enough in purpose to earn a separate final chapter after the roots. Several chapters combine closely related crops into one, since their care overlaps enough to make separate chapters repetitive.
Each chapter follows the familiar structure: difficulty level, health benefits, tools, choosing varieties, planting, growing conditions, feeding, timeline, common problems, harvesting, storage, food safety, recipes, and FAQ.
