Petals Fall, Fragrance Lingers by Victor Yau

A city of transit, a nation in turmoil, and a young man's journey toward grace.

In the bustling, high-stakes metropolis of 1970s Hong Kong—a fragile haven caught between colonial British rule and the looming shadow of mainland China—Wilson returns from five years of higher education in the United States. But his homecoming is interrupted by the ghosts of his past.

Growing up during the harrowing decades of water shortages, poverty, and the distant, terrifying shockwaves of China's Cultural Revolution, Wilson navigated a world of lost friendships, first loves, and heartbreaking family sacrifices. As his childhood neighborhood faces imminent demolition to make way for a modernizing city, Wilson steps back into the time capsule of his attic room to confront the raw, unforgettable burn marks of his youth.

From the bustling streets of Kowloon to the quiet resilience of ordinary refugees and scholars, Petals Fall, Fragrance Lingers is a sweeping, deeply emotional coming-of-age novel. It is a poignant exploration of how we digest sorrow, forgive the unforgivable, and transform the dark moments of history into stepping stones toward peace, love, and a lasting human spirit.

For readers of historical fiction and deeply intimate diaspora narratives, this story reminds us that even as petals fall, the fragrance of memory lingers on.
