Couple and Sex Therapy Supervision by Stephen J. Betchen

This book recognizes the inextricable link between conflict in intimate relationships and sexual problems, providing clinical couple and sex therapy supervisors with essential tools and considerations to help their supervisees better understand, address, and treat couples who experience a variety of sexual problems.

Dr. Stephen Betchen utilizes his psychoanalytic conflict- systems theory model as a base from which to demonstrate and teach supervisors of all developmental stages how to conduct supervision in treating couples with conflict – both sexual and nonsexual in nature. Chapters illustrate how supervisors can expand and adapt their therapeutic model of supervision, addressing the need for structure and boundary- setting in the supervision process. This book also emphasizes the importance of considering gender, race, and other sociocultural factors, as well as transferencecountertransference and parallel process.

Filled with supervision cases for clinical and theoretical support, this is an invaluable guide for therapists and supervisors wishing to seamlessly integrate couple and sex therapy. This book is essential for clinicians who supervise trainees and supervisees of all levels, particularly those who work with couples that present with a wide range of sexual challenges and symptoms.
