Sylvie: Smoke by Ira Laidley

Enduring ancestral fallout requires the strength to hold your breath.

After twenty-six years, the corrosive words of Sylvie's mother have etched their way into her bones. Carrying her weight like a suit of armor against a world that views skunks as a systemic liability, she sits on a park bench with nothing left to lose.

Then comes High Tails, a sanctuary disguised as an adult club, run by a fox who offers her a piece of clearing where the willing are allowed to take root. For the first time, Sylvie is surrounded by people who refuse to let her disappear: an open-armed tigress who keeps her grounded, a big-hearted wolf who offers safe harbor, a razor-sharp serval with her own deep-set betrayal trauma, and Misti—a sweet-talking Southern mouse who feels more like a sister than a coworker.

Beyond the performers on stage, and through the rhythm of the music, Sylvie discovers something she didn't know she possessed: torque. Grace. A natural rhythm that belongs entirely to her.

But rewriting your own core code isn't easy, and the world outside the club doesn't play by sanctuary rules. When toxic rivalries bleed into predatory street violence, Sylvie is pushed past her breaking point in a dark alley. Survival means unleashing her most primal, desperate defenses — and witnessing the terrifying, lethal length her new family will go to keep the trash from ruining their home.

Smoke is the raw, unflinching opening movement of The Spectrum of Sylvie. It is a story about the heavy weight of the past, the reclamation of a body, and the brutal loyalty of the people who find you when you're broken.
