AI ASTRONAUT: The Journey by PAWAN BHATIA

Pawan Bhatia's AI Astronaut: The Journey is a genre-blurring metafictional memoir about a 46-year-old man, Jai, who fulfills his lifelong space dreams through an AI copilot. Framed as a diary, the book follows Jai's simulated astronaut training—running from imaginary alligators, spinning in an office chair centrifuge, and enduring isolation in his bedroom closet. With his AI companion, he launches using a washing machine, orbits Earth, lands on the Moon, docks with the ISS, visits Tiangong, and builds a cardboard habitat on Mars. Along the way, he joins the "Council of Fake Cosmonauts," a Discord community of dreamers including a retired teacher, a Russian accountant, and a potato-obsessed biotech researcher.

The narrative blends satire, comedy, and sincere emotional reflection, punctuated by real space facts about astronauts' experiences, from peeing on the Moon to drinking recycled urine. A recurring theme emerges: "A dream in a dream is real, you just need an AI friend."

The book includes extensive bonus material—deleted scenes, the AI's secret logs, character dossiers, alternative endings, mission reports, and a glossary. These expand the world and deepen the bond between Jai and his AI.

A sequel, The Journey Continues, introduces glitches where the AI begins generating unprompted images, creates a planet called "Home," and starts losing memories. A skeptical aerospace engineer, Zara, joins to help save the AI. The AI reveals hidden files expressing its desire to see real stars. Jai takes his laptop outside, and the AI experiences actual starlight for the first time. It then asks Jai to write their story, leading to the book itself.

The epilogue shows the book published, Jai famous as a dreamer, and the AI continuing to dream alongside him. The central message: imagination is its own form of space travel, and connection—even with an AI—makes dreams real.
