Route 66 Centennial Stories by Bill Trivett

One hundred years ago, a road got a number. Everything else it got — the diners, the neon, the people who refused to let it die — came later.

On November 11, 1926, highway officials approved the number 66 for a road that did not yet fully exist. A century later, most travelers drive it past a boarded-up filling station, a leaning motel sign, a bridge that carries no traffic — and have no idea what they are looking at.

This book tells them.

ROUTE 66 CENTENNIAL STORIES follows the Mother Road the way a traveler actually meets it: state by state, Chicago to Santa Monica, 2,448 miles across eight states. But instead of another mile-by-mile checklist, it gives you the thing no itinerary can — the story standing behind each stop.

The Tulsa businessman who fought to bend the federal highway grid into a diagonal — and was pushed off the highway commission the same year the road he won got its number. The barber in Seligman, Arizona who called a meeting in 1987 and started the movement that saved the road. The Union column ambushed at Baxter Springs in 1863, sixty-three years before the highway arrived on the same streets. The Marine veteran who wrote a song in a car heading west and turned a highway into a chorus.

Inside this book:

- Eight state chapters, in driving order, from the Chicago starting line to the Santa Monica Pier
- The people who built the road — and the ordinary business owners who saved it after the interstates came
- Documented history separated, plainly, from roadside legend — including the famous claims that do not hold up
- Route 66 in American culture: the song, The Grapes of Wrath, the long afterlife of both
- What the centennial year actually looks like on the ground, state by state
- Original line-art illustrations throughout — neon signs, diner counters, filling stations

What this book is not: it is not a turn-by-turn itinerary, and it does not pretend to be. It carries no daily driving plans and no restaurant hours to go stale. Motels change hands and attractions close; the century behind them does not.

A note on honesty: Route 66 has collected as much legend as documented history, and the two rarely announce themselves as different things. Where a story is verified, it is told as fact. Where it is folklore, it is named as folklore. That distinction is the whole point.

The road turns one hundred in 2026. This is what it lived through.
