The Terms of Silence by Michael K. Eaton

He was named her legal guardian in a will he never wanted to read. I was twenty-two when my father died and left me — legally, absurdly, irrevocably — in the care of a man ten years older than me who I'd known my entire life as Daddy's best friend. Not a stranger. Worse. Someone who'd watched me grow up, who'd sat at our table every Sunday, who now controlled my inheritance, my house, and — until I turn twenty-five — every legal decision that touches my life. Rhys Calder didn't ask for this. I can see it in the way he looks at me now, like I'm a debt he's paying off. Cold. Controlled. Careful never to be alone with me longer than a hallway. I tell myself I hate him for it. I'm lying. Three years of built-up want doesn't disappear because a lawyer put his name on a piece of paper. If anything, the paper made it worse — made him someone I'm not allowed to have in a way that feels like a countdown clock over both our heads. He has a past he won't talk about, a reason he flinches when people call him a good man, and a control he wears like armor — until the night it finally cracks. Rhys says the arrangement ends the day I turn twenty-five. He says that's the only reason either of us can survive this. He's wrong. Some things don't end. They just get named.
