The Drowned Witness by A. Dewell

A missing archivist. A drowned woman who may never have drowned. And an island that keeps witnesses long after the tide comes in.

When Mara Vale receives two photographs of the same causeway—one from 1943 and one dated a year in the future—she knows better than to treat the image as prophecy. But the warning becomes harder to ignore when archivist Nessa Ward disappears while surveying the abandoned Saint Vey Marine Observatory.

Nessa's recovered camera contains one final photograph.

She is standing inside a flooded room beside Daniel Rusk, a man who died in 1951.

At Saint Vey, reflected daylight reveals rooms that no longer exist, missing objects appear inside preserved scenes, and a drenched female figure repeatedly surfaces in photographs and standing water. The locals call her the Drowned Witness.

But the deeper Mara investigates, the less certain that identity becomes.

Old harbour records show people returning before they were officially recovered. Evidence was deliberately abandoned on the island. Witness names were removed, borrowed, or reassigned. And someone in the present has been carefully arranging photographs, access records, and family history to guide Mara toward conclusions prepared long before she arrived.

The truth is more dangerous than a ghost story.

Because Saint Vey does not preserve one drowned woman.

It preserves unfinished testimony.

And someone has learned how to decide which witness gets believed.

The Drowned Witness is Book 3 in The Blackwater Hauntings, an atmospheric gothic mystery of tidal islands, future-dated photographs, altered records, missing witnesses, and supernatural evidence that becomes dangerous when someone controls the story around it.
