Max Effort by Lilith Ember

Callum Finch closes The Kiln alone after midnight. The private strength gym is silent except for the hum of the HVAC and the soft rattle of plates settling on the racks. He is twenty-seven, freckled, copper-haired, built like a runner who learned to lift only because the job required it. Wiry. Fast. Still learning how to move under real weight.

The two owners stay late.

Kwame Mensah is thick the way powerlifters are thick—deep brown skin, short twists, shoulders that block the light when he steps into a doorway. Etienne Moreau is leaner, taller, olive-skinned, dark hair waved back, green eyes that track every mistake Callum makes with the bar path. They do not rush. They watch him re-rack, wipe the benches, check the cameras. Then they lock the front door from the inside and tell him the night is not finished.

What starts as a correction on form becomes hands on him. What starts as a spot becomes mouths. Callum is smaller than both of them. They use that. They put him on the platform, on the bench, against the cold metal of the rack. They take turns and then take him together. The risk of a late member or a security walk-through stays sharp the whole time—lights low, door locked, every sound too loud in the empty gym. Callum says he should leave. He does not leave. He stays on his knees, on his back, bent over the bench while they decide who goes first and who goes deeper.

By the time the sun starts to gray the windows, Callum is marked, used, and kept. The owners make the arrangement permanent: he closes every night, and they stay. He learns the rules of The Kiln after hours—the praise, the degradation, the way they hold him open and make him take both. He learns that the cameras can be turned off. He learns that he does not want them back on.
