Rose O' the River by Kate Douglas Smith Wiggin

Rose O' the River opens on the Saco in Maine, where the river is more than scenery: it is livelihood, danger, spectacle, and a living companion to the people who depend on it. Stephen Waterman, practical, fearless, and hopelessly romantic, belongs to that world as naturally as the logs he rides. Each morning he watches the riverbank with growing anticipation, his attention drawn to Rose Wiley, the warmhearted, spirited young woman who quietly rules the Brier Neighborhood with her beauty, domestic skill, and kindness. Around them unfolds a lively community of working households, sharp-tongued elders, and river men whose banter reveals both humor and affection. Rose's grandfather, Old Kennebec, and her grandmother add comic color while debating Stephen's reckless devotion to river driving, a talent that makes him admired, if not always approved of. The great log drives turn the Saco into a scene of suspense and public drama, and Stephen's daring, including a memorable rescue, confirms his bond with the river. As he prepares yet again to ask Rose to marry him, the novel blends romance, labor, and local life into a warm rural tale of love, ambition, and the way ordinary mornings can become radiant with hope.
