William, A Cumberland Rebel by Ian P Loftus

In 1745, William Birkett knows the boundaries of his life: the stone walls of a tenant farm in Caldbeck, the weight of rent and duty, and the future others expect him to accept. He loves Catherine Lowther, but restlessness runs deeper than good sense. When Prince Charles Edward Stuart's Jacobite army enters Cumberland, William sees more than a political cause. He sees a road beyond the valley and a chance to become something larger than a farmer working another man's land.

He leaves home with more hunger for change than conviction. Among marching men, uncertain loyalties and bold promises, rebellion first feels like fellowship and purpose. But the campaign soon contracts into cold, hunger, rumour and retreat. From Penrith and Carlisle to the brutal confusion of Clifton Moor and the sodden field at Culloden, William discovers that history is not made cleanly by heroes. It is endured by ordinary people who rarely understand the price until payment is demanded.

When the rising collapses, William becomes one prisoner among many. Captured, confined and tried as a traitor, he enters a machinery of punishment measured in lists, warrants, irons and miles. A sentence of death may be reprieved, but mercy has its own cruelty. William is marched south through an England that watches the condemned pass, then held at Plymouth to await transportation across the Atlantic. Survival now depends not on courage alone, but on usefulness, silence and knowing when to resist.

In Cumberland, Catherine must live with the consequences of the choice William made. News comes slowly and never whole. With his fate uncertain, she faces family pressure, damaged reputation and the practical terror of a future without protection. Her decisions are shaped not by easy betrayal but by the narrow choices available to a woman whose security depends upon property, marriage and the judgement of others. While William is carried farther from home, Catherine fights to preserve a life from what remains.

Aboard the transport ship, rebellion is reduced to bodies, labour and value. Water is rationed. Illness spreads. Men learn that the years of a sentence can be bought, assigned and worked. William has escaped the scaffold, but the Atlantic carries him towards another form of captivity in Maryland, where his strength may keep him alive while making him valuable to strangers.

At the heart of the novel is the bond between William and Catherine: tested by distance, reshaped by necessity and never protected from the demands of class or law. Their story asks what loyalty means when every available choice carries a cost, and whether survival can itself become a kind of betrayal. Around them, farmers, labourers, soldiers, prisoners and families face the same hard question: how much of a life can power take before the person who lived it is lost?

Rather than viewing the rebellion from courts and command tents, the novel follows it from fields, alehouses, prison cells, marching roads and the crowded deck of a transport ship. History is experienced through work, hunger, weather, rumour and the paperwork that turns a neighbour into a traitor and a prisoner into a commodity.

William A Cumberland Rebel is a character-led historical novel about loyalty, consequence and survival during the Jacobite rising of 1745–46. Rooted in the farms, roads and market towns of Cumberland, it follows the human cost of rebellion from the first seductive promise of change to defeat, transportation and forced labour across the Atlantic.

Part of The Cumberland Chronicles, a sequence following one Cumberland family through centuries of upheaval, the novel can be read as a complete standalone story. For readers who enjoy immersive historical fiction, morally complex characters and ordinary lives caught in the machinery of power.
