James Boswell (Restored Classics to Go Edition) by W. Keith Leask

James Boswell emerges here as far more than the familiar companion of Johnson: restless, comic, vain, gifted, and impossible to ignore. This vivid portrait traces his journey from unsettled youth to literary fame, showing how ambition, appetite, and self-dramatizing impulse shaped both his life and his writing. W. Keith Leask's study, dedicated to Johnson scholar George Birkbeck Hill, sets out to correct the distortions of Boswell's reputation and offer a fuller understanding of the man behind The Life of Johnson. Boswell passes through religion, law, London society, and fashionable circles, forever trying on roles as priest, soldier, wit, poet, and public man. His eccentric performances, self-mocking verses, club life, and comic excesses reveal a personality at once charming and unstable. The narrative also explores his tangled romances, drinking, gambling, marriage, and domestic tensions, while highlighting his growing importance as Johnson's biographer and a shrewd social organizer. The later chapters lead into the Hebrides tour, where travel and observation deepen the story of a life inseparable from literature.
