James Oliver Curwood (Restored Classics to Go Edition) by Hobart Donald Swiggett

James Oliver Curwood: Disciple of the Wilds introduces a self-made writer, adventurer, and conservationist whose life was inseparable from the Canadian Northwest and the hard-driving creed that shaped him. Framed as both tribute and rediscovery, the biography presents Curwood as a rugged figure whose books and reputation earned lasting popularity. Built on extensive research, it draws from family recollections, letters, photographs, manuscripts, and local memories to create a richly documented portrait. From his birth in Owosso, Michigan, in 1878, Curwood emerges as a restless, mischievous boy marked by adventure, imagination, and an early hunger to write. Childhood friendships, the guidance of "Whistling Jeanne" Fisher, a religious awakening, and his first payment for a story all help form the young man who begins to believe in his future as an author. His secret bicycle journey opens the wider world, while his travels through swamps and timberlands deepen his bond with nature. A reckless money-making scheme and its legal fallout bring hard lessons, leaving him wiser and more determined as the story moves toward his college years and the making of a legend.
