Humoresque by Fannie Hurst

From the crowded, music-saturated streets of New York's Lower East Side to concert halls and drawing rooms, these intertwined scenes trace the rise of a gifted immigrant child and the women who shape, shelter, and suffer for him. In Abrahm Kantor's tenement brass shop, where family life and labor share the same cramped air, young Leon's birthday plea for a violin turns a noisy household into a crucible of destiny. His mother, Sarah, sacrifices to buy the battered instrument, and Leon's first haunting note reveals a prodigy born amid poverty, bickering, and fierce love. The story then leaps ahead to Leon's fame as a celebrated violin virtuoso, adored by royalty and crowds yet still undone by stage fright and emotional dependence on his mother. Alongside this rise, the narrative widens to other women caught in harsh domestic arrangements: Edith Worte, facing the terror of blindness, finds comfort in Sadie Barnet's loyalty; Sadie is later courted with a house that masks Jerry Beck's domineering cruelty; and Peachy fights to keep her blind foster mother from being sent away. Across these lives, ambition, tenderness, and oppression collide in a world of immigrant striving and fragile hope. This edition has been fully restored with modern typesetting, custom cover design.
