The Mourning Heart by M.L. Bullock

Professional mourner Inez Pike has grieved beside more coffins than she can remember. But she has never been asked to mourn a dead man alone—or spend the night inside the house where his body waits.

For one hundred dollars, Inez agrees to sit vigil over Judge Thaddeus Wren until morning. The instructions are simple: keep the lamps burning, cover every mirror, and never leave the dead man unattended.

But the Mourning House has rules of its own.

Behind its locked doors, mirrors whisper, buried names return, and the judge's corpse seems to breathe beneath its shroud. When Inez hears the voice of her own dead daughter calling from somewhere inside the house, she realizes she was not hired merely to mourn Thaddeus Wren.

She was summoned to bear witness.

Dark, atmospheric, and steeped in Southern Gothic mystery, The Mourning House is a haunting tale of grief, injustice, and the restless dead who refuse to be forgotten.
